Classroom Modifications for Teachers of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
Where should these students sit in the classroom?
The student should sit where it is easiest to access auditory information. This is usually toward the front of the class and towards the side with the aided or implanted ear facing the teacher.
Visual Aids...
Whenever possible, visual aids will help the DHH student. The idea is that things can be seen and heard. Pictures, charts, and diagrams, just to name a few.
This is a sample of a visual aid one might have in the classroom.
Buddy System
In some cases, the buddy system might be a modification to make in the classroom. This is when you take an independent student and ask them to assist a less independent student. Just be sure that the less independent student does not become overly dependent.
FM System
If the student uses an FM system, remember to wear the microphone and speak naturally.
